One of the scariest parts of my last and final arrest wasn’t the fact that I got my first felony charge.
It was the fact that I knew I had to change everything.
I can remember the moment, sitting on my bed in a puddle of tears realizing that I would have to lose everything I knew as normal if I wanted to change my life..
I knew that if I wanted to stop ending up where I kept ending up, I needed to put myself around people who were doing things differently.
So I uncomfortably put myself in rooms where I didn’t feel I belonged, yet.
I sat with men and women with years of sobriety.
I entered into the gym with no idea what I was doing.
I started conversations with people who had things that I wanted.
I asked questions with fear in th back of my throat.
I shared my story, who I was and where I wanted to go.
For me, outgrowing my past life and my behaviors was a non-negotiable.
And there were a lot of days where I felt alone on this new path, ready to give up where my new support system saved me.
It’s uncomfortable to put yourself in a room of people you don’t know.
It seems easier to stay where you are, knowing that you’ll continue do what you’ve always done and be who you’ve always been.
