The Marketing Agency Owner Who Made Space for Family While Still Scaling Her Business

BlogWeb-Header5-29.png

When I first met Kathy, she was like many women entrepreneurs I work with:

Balancing it all, trying to be the best business owner, mom, wife, and everything in between.

She had a full plate: Managing and growing Oh Yes Communications, her successful marketing agency of 13 years, raising 4 kids alongside her husband, the navigation of a longer-than-anticipated adoption journey, and a passion for fitness and wellness.

And while Kathy’s business was thriving, her own sense of balance was slipping away.

The never-ending to-do lists, the pressure to perform, and the fear of dropping the ball made it feel impossible to find time for rest or the things that light us up outside of work.

Through intentional changes and setting clear boundaries, we found a way for her to scale her business while embracing the life she truly wanted to live.

Before Working With Me

On the outside, Kathy’s life looked dialed in. Her business was growing, she worked out, ate well, and stayed organized.

But underneath, she was overwhelmed and disconnected from herself.

She didn’t need help with discipline…

She needed help untangling the mindset that told her she had to do it all. What we uncovered wasn’t a messy business. It was that she felt like a mess on the inside.

Believing in The "More" Mindset

Kathy shared her deep-seated fear of slowing down.

She had always operated at full speed, stretched thin, constantly moving from one task to the next. Slowing down felt like it might cause everything she worked hard for to unravel.

Kathy acknowledged that, in the beginning, she believed growing her business meant adding more of everything…

  • More team members

  • More clients

  • More layers of management

She had believed the lie she needed to grow the business the way other people grow businesses.

Struggling with Boundaries and Personal Wellness

Kathy admitted she lacked structure and boundaries in her approach to the business and herself as a leader. She often found herself working late hours, putting her personal needs last (even though she still thought she prioritized it).

Her lack of boundaries impacted her life and her ability to be present with her family.

Kathy also shared how, despite appearing to have it all together, she was overwhelmed by the constant balance of responsibilities. When we met, her body “screaming at her”, by having heart palpitations and through-the-roof anxiety.

Experiencing Negative Effect on Personal Relationships

Kathy’s work habits were also causing tension at home.

She shared how her husband would get frustrated when she continued working after he came home:

"My husband would get home and I’m like, backup’s here, I’ve got another 45 minutes, but that would make my husband so frustrated. He’s like, I just came home from working this long day. You just stay till kingdom come in this office."

Looking for a Partner, Not Just a Coach

Kathy found me through one of my other clients, Sarah, who had shared about a retreat and the peace she felt from it.

That sense of calm was what drew Kathy in.

When she first reached out on Instagram, she didn’t have the exact words for what she needed, but knew it wasn’t just another coach who felt like a therapist.

What she really wanted was a partner.

Someone who could get in the trenches with her, help her see what she couldn’t, and guide her through the next steps.

And over the 18 months we’ve worked together, it became clear just how personal and emotional this process would be. It was deeper than she expected, not just for her business, but for her as a whole person.

Achievements and Breakthroughs in Our Partnership

Created A Schedule That Supports Growth and Presence

In 2024, Kathy and her husband adopted their daughter, Isla, after a two year long waiting journey.

To prime herself for spending this time present with her family, she shifted her hours from 30, 35 to 20 tops for a few months.

And she still ended the year with a similar revenue point as the previous year, having worked half the amount of hours and not taking on clients for three months to focus on family.

This was proof for her that she can slow down and things will still work out.

Reclaiming Her Health and Balance

Kathy said it herself: “2024 was a big health focus.” That didn’t just mean eating better or moving her body.

It meant stepping back from urgency, making room for joy, rest, and margin.

Together, we built her year around what mattered most: her family’s rhythms, her energy, and her long-term goals.

“Mapping it all out gave me such clarity and I love clarity. That's like my favorite word, right? So that was really freeing.”

She set clear boundaries around how many clients to take on, planned her calendar with intention, and gave herself permission to work less without guilt.

Redefined Success

Kathy used to feel like she had to choose:

Either take on smaller, meaningful projects OR go all in on high-revenue clients.

But this year, she gave herself permission to do both.

She leaned into the belief that fulfillment and profitability weren’t mutually exclusive. She could say yes to creatively energizing clients and take on larger, fast-paced projects that stretched her team in all the best ways.

Created More Calm at Home And In Her Personal Relationships

By building more ease into her work, she also brought more peace into her home.

Kathy noticed a big drop in her day-to-day anxiety. “I think my husband really appreciated not having to be the ear that listens to me 24/7,” she joked.

Now he gets to just be her husband, which is what he signed up for.

Built Daily Systems and Team Structure

As entrepreneurs, we know the to-do list is never-ending. You knock out five things, and seven more pop up by morning.

Kathy and I started building systems that brought her back into control, both in her day-to-day and in how her team supported her. This shift has helped her stop backfilling her time with busy work and start being intentional with how she spent her energy.

Embracing Abundance in All Areas of Life

Kathy picked two words for the year: unhurried and abundance.

"I'm choosing to believe that even in the unhurried, I have abundance in every facet of my life, the business, my family, my own fulfillment."

Watching her lean into that…taking weekends off social media, finding new hobbies, enjoying friendships, developing a life outside of her business and becoming aligned with her values of family and life and living that first, has been really beautiful.

Leaning Into Her Community

A cherry on top has been the community Kathy didn't think she needed.

Attending two different retreats were “life-giving in different ways”, being both a reflection of a past version of herself and refresher of not wanting to go back to that version.

It was inspiring for heer to meet women generating a high income on a minimal schedule. It has expanded her mind for what's possible.

Continuing to Grow as a CEO and Leader

Kathy is committed to ongoing growth both as a leader and a CEO. She’s embracing the journey of personal and professional development with intention and reflection. Here’s how she’s continuing to evolve:

  • Continuing to Let People Be Human: Kathy is still learning to embrace the humanity in herself, her team, and her family by not holding anyone to impossibly high standards. Instead, she’s finding value in accepting imperfections and understanding that everyone is navigating their own challenges.

  • Continuing to Shift Expectations in Business: Kathy is still shifting her approach in business by diving into the details with her team, but with a more patient and thoughtful mindset.

  • Continuing to Celebrate Success and Personal Achievements: Kathy is making it a point to celebrate her successes, big and small. After landing her first six-figure contract, she treated herself to something special: a necklace she had admired for a long time.

A Partner In Your Unfolding Potential

If you've ever worked with a business coach, you might expect a lot of theory and high-level advice. But with me, it’s all about getting in the trenches with you, not just in marketing or team conversations, but in the whole business picture.

Kathy has said it best: "When you see Kelsea in her element, her beautiful mind is just doing its thing."
